If you want assistance finding the truck that will meet your every requirement—big and small—we have you covered.

How to Pick the Right Sierra for Your Needs

The GMC Sierra family is comprised of three full-size pickups, and you’ll have the option to choose the light-duty Sierra 1500 or the heavy-duty Sierra 2500 and Sierra 3500. So, which one is best for your needs? Well, we can help you figure that out...

The Sierra 1500 is a terrific everyday truck and one of the most customizable models in GMC's lineup. That’s because it has a huge menu of powertrains to choose from, letting you prioritize what matters most to you. Between four-cylinder and V6 engines, all the way to V8s and diesel options, you can easily get the power and fuel economy you want. You’ll notice a stark difference in the towing abilities between your powertrain options, and that just speaks to the customizable nature of the Sierra 1500.

If you want a daily driver with moderate towing abilities, you can have it with the Sierra 1500. If you need a serious workhorse, you can have that, too. It also has several bed and cab configurations, so you can choose between more passenger space, more cargo space, or an equal helping of both. We often sell the Sierra 1500 to those who do occasional contracting, construction, or agricultural work but also need a vehicle for running errands and managing family life.

Should you elevate from the Sierra 1500 to the Sierra 2500, you’re moving into the commercial-grade territory. Your powertrain options will be limited to beefier ones because this model is meant to be a serious workhorse—and, as such, its towing abilities are nearly double those of the Sierra 1500.

You’ll notice a bed and cab option drop for the Sierra 2500, too, and its options are larger than those of the Sierra 1500 because it’s ready for transporting lots of goods and tools in its bed. Still, the Sierra 2500 can be right for someone who needs to spend equal amounts of time at job sites and off of them. Do note that its dimensions are more friendly to daily driving than its larger kin, the Sierra 3500.

At the top of the family is the Sierra 3500, a distinctly work-ready pickup. It sees a massive jump in towing and payload capacities compared to the Sierra 2500, and its powertrain options are tremendous. If you are looking for a truck that will spend most of its time dragging huge pieces of equipment as part of demanding jobs, the Sierra 3500 is the way to go. When you need a serious work truck, you need the GMC Sierra 3500.
